Joseph John “Joe” Bees, 47, died Saturday, January 12, 2019 of an apparent heart attack.

Joe was born December 21, 1971 in Cleveland, Ohio. Over the course of his career, Joe worked at many well-known area restaurants such as Murray’s Grille, Salty Pelican, and 801 Kitchen & Bar. He was most recently employed as a sous chef at the Down Under Restaurant. His co-workers were his local family.

Joe came to Fernandina Beach in 2005 for a short visit, fell in love with the area, and never left. He was an avid fisherman who slayed the trout and redfish daily. He was generous with his time and cooking talents and often prepared food for the Yulee High School wrestling team’s events. He was also a devoted fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns.

Joe is survived by his parents, Robert and Margaret Bees of Broadview Heights, Ohio; his siblings, Cindy (Joel) Kopen of North Royalton, Ohio, Laura (Paul) Jakubisin of Cambridge, Ohio, and Bob (Michelle) Bees of Fernandina Beach; his children, whom he loved beyond measure, Zachariah (Kayla Alisa) Bees of Mexico, Mo., Tesla Albrecht of Norfolk, Va., and Riley and Bryce Bees of Yulee, Fla.; grandchildren, Kenton and Evelynn Albrecht of Norfolk; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial celebration will be held 2-7 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Green Turtle in Fernandina Beach. Donations for his sons are being accepted at that event and also through a GoFundMe account set up by the Yulee High School Wrestling Club.

Joey will live forever in our hearts. We will miss him always.
